When we think about preparing for an interview we always think about the side of the interviewee. You want to make a good impression and get the job. But the person conducting the interview needs to be completely prepared as well. Whether you are a Canadian lawyer hiring associates for your new Peoria office or are in the market for a nanny to take care of your kids you need to make sure that you find the right person or people to work with. Here are some tips for preparing to conduct an interview.
Make sure that you know exactly what you're looking for in an employee. Usually you will get people with all sorts of different experience and skills applying for the same position and you need to have a full understanding of what you want before entering the interviewing stage. If you were building an internet marketing Toronto firm, for example, you might be looking for someone to help you build your customer base. That would mean that they would need great communication and organizational skills as well as an affinity for sales. If however you were looking at assistants to work in the same firm you might just want someone that you personally could work well with.
Do as much research as possible on each candidate before meeting with him or her. Read over their resume and know which elements you would like more information on. You should also think about the specific questions that you are going to ask to get those answers out of them. You might be the type of interviewer that asks situational questions with lots of hypotheticals or could be more direct. One style might be more appropriate for finding a manager while the other suits an interview for someone who will be working with a pressure calibrator on a factory floor.
If there are several people that will be working with the new employee you might want to invite some of them into the interview process. It's always a good idea to get a few different perspectives on the various candidates and people in different departments might have separate requests for what that person can and should be able to do. While you might be the owner of a discount postcard printing firm you might not know everything that the designers or managers need to do on a daily basis to keep things running smoothly.
You always will want to make sure that you're hiring for a person's personality as well as their skills and experience. When you're working in any sort of business environment, whether it's a flower shop or an ESL Toronto learning center you want to work well with the people around you in order to provide the highest quality service or product. That means you should be looking for someone that will fit into the type of work environment that you have created for your business.
